new guy looking for simple stub app

Can someone show me how to create a java app ( not applet ) wherein I can create a frame and display several buttons on that frame. What i want to be able to do is to press a button or MenuItem and then repaint the screen with more(orless) buttons than are currently on the screen.
This may be easy for you but for a new guy like me, it is a nightmare. Can anyone show me how to do this please ?
